The Vets on Track Foundation’s Community Connection Project creates meaningful opportunities for veterans, first responders, their families, and community members to come together through fellowship, patriotic service, remembrance, and shared purpose.

At the heart of the Project is a simple belief: connection matters. Isolation and disconnection can have a profound impact on veterans and first responders, particularly during times of transition, hardship, or loss. By creating welcoming places to gather, serve, and build relationships, the Community Connection Project strengthens the sense of belonging that reminds our heroes they remain valued members of the communities they served.

The Project brings that mission to life through several signature programs and activities:

Operation Flag Swap

Operation Flag Swap helps ensure that the American flag is displayed with the dignity and respect it deserves. Foundation Ambassadors and volunteers identify worn, faded, or damaged American flags throughout the community and work with homeowners, businesses, organizations, and public spaces to replace them with new flags at no cost when resources allow.

Retired flags are collected for proper and respectful retirement, turning a simple act of service into an opportunity to promote patriotism, flag education, and community pride.

Networking Coffee Socials

Our Networking Coffee Socials provide veterans, first responders, family members, community leaders, businesses, and supporters with a relaxed and welcoming environment to meet, talk, and build genuine relationships.

Hosted throughout the Richmond/RVA region, these gatherings are intentionally informal. There are no expectations and no complicated agendas—just coffee, conversation, fellowship, and an opportunity to connect.

For some participants, a Coffee Social may lead to a new friendship, professional connection, volunteer opportunity, or needed resource. For others, it simply provides a reason to get out, sit down with people who understand service, and know they are part of a community that cares.

Wreaths Across America

Through participation in Wreaths Across America, the Vets on Track Foundation joins communities across the nation in the mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach.

Foundation volunteers help honor veterans who have passed by participating in wreath-laying ceremonies and encouraging families, businesses, volunteers, and young people to understand the importance of remembering those who served.

This annual tradition ensures that the names, sacrifices, and legacies of our nation's veterans are never forgotten.

Flag Retirement Ceremonies &

Community Cookouts

The Foundation's Flag Retirement Ceremonies & Community Cookouts combine patriotic tradition with community fellowship.

During each ceremony, worn and unserviceable American flags are retired with the dignity, reverence, and respect befitting our nation's colors. Veterans, first responders, families, civic organizations, businesses, and community members are invited to participate and learn about the meaning behind this important American tradition.

The Community Cookout extends the experience beyond the ceremony by bringing people together around a shared table. Food, conversation, fellowship, and community create an atmosphere where relationships can form naturally and veterans and first responders can reconnect with the people and communities they served.

More Than Events—Building Belonging

The Community Connection Project is ultimately about more than flags, wreaths, coffee, ceremonies, or cookouts. It is about people.

Every gathering creates another opportunity to reduce isolation, strengthen relationships, recognize service, preserve traditions, and remind veterans, first responders, and their families that their community still stands beside them.

Through Operation Flag Swap, Networking Coffee Socials, Wreaths Across America, and Flag Retirement Ceremonies & Community Cookouts, the Vets on Track Foundation transforms remembrance and fellowship into meaningful human connection—building stronger communities while ensuring that those who served are honored, connected, and never forgotten.
